The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) My rating:

I don’t usually like dystopian fiction, and thought I wouldn’t really enjoy the book. How wrong I was about that - in fact I am a bit annoyed with myself as cannot get matching editions of all three books – ugh.

This book turned out to be a real page-turner despite its predictable storyline. Easy to read, fast-paced, sometimes funny, sometimes scary, it kept me up way past my bedtime!

     When I learned Sue at Book by Book was launching her 2020 Big Book Summer Reading Challenge (also on GoodReads ), I thought about it for a couple of days, then realised I shall be reading books with 400+ pages anyway.       And who am I to turn down the opportunity for a giveaway for doing something I love and am planning on doing anyway?        So, down to the nitty gritty details: Sue says any book with 400+ pages fits the bill, and one book is all it takes to qualify. These are my current contenders for this year's Big Book Summer Challenge: “Americanah” by Chimanda Ngozi Adichie (477 pages)     Ah, now this! This, I have been wanting to read for absolutely ages.     Chimanda Ngozi Adichie having left Nigeria at the age of 19 to go to the US, I can imagine how the book’s blurb and her own personal experience of going to America will mingle throughout the book.      ...

When I recently published my original "shortlist" of books for this year's big book summer challenge hosted by Sue at BookByBook , I hadn't expected so many responses.  Thank you all so much for your thoughts and feedback on Blogger, Twitter and Instagram!  I've compiled a short er list for this year's Big Book Summer challenge:  ❶ The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett ❷ The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas ❸ The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne ❹ The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón ❺ Me Before You by Jojo Moyes ❻ The Testaments by Margaret Atwood ❼ The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes ❽ Scythe by Neal Shusterman This is going to be really tough with only 13 weeks of challenge ahead.  I’ve crunched the numbers, and I need to increase my reading by about 20% - so wish me luck, and I'll be keeping you posted on my progress!

The Final Cut (House of Cards III) by Michael C. Dobbs

My rating: In this final volume of The House of Cards trilogy, Michael Dobbs skilfully sends us back to Francis Urquhart’s humble beginnings in the army. As the tides turn, and some ugly truths threaten to surface, FU looks stuck between a rock and a hard place. Is he evil enough to turn the tables as damning evidence starts piling and the political forces finally start turning against him? This was much better than the second in the series. The depictions of Cyprus and its people are vivid, the writing style throughout was almost poetic and brought back fond memories of my own trip to Cyprus some 25 years ago. It also brought the trilogy to a momentous end. Note: all three books in the revised edition are peppered with typos and various other mistakes. This is not reflected in my rating.
